Zelda's Story: A Fighter Finds Her Way Home

When we launched The Benny Memorial Medical Fundraiser, we promised to introduce you to some of the dogs whose lives your generosity is changing right now. Today, we want you to meet Zelda.

Happy and healthy

Zelda came into rescue weighing just 24 pounds. By the time her previous owners finally brought her to a veterinarian, she was in shock. Her gums were white, and she was barely responsive. The picture that emerged was one of profound neglect. She had a severe infestation of hookworms and whipworms that had caused dangerous anemia. She was severely dehydrated. And she was starving, emaciated to a degree most people will never see in a living dog.

Her Body Condition Score was 1/9. For those unfamiliar with the scale, 1/9 is the lowest it goes. It means every rib, every bump of spine, and every hip bone was clearly visible under her skin. There was no fat to feel. There was almost no muscle left. Her waist and abdominal tuck were so extreme that her body had begun to consume itself just to stay alive.

At the hospital an hour before 
GSRA picked her up.

Zelda needed a blood transfusion almost immediately, and she came very close to needing a second one. She spent three and a half days in intensive care, with our medical team and the veterinary staff fighting for her around the clock.

Even getting her to eat again was dangerous. A body as starved as Zelda's is at serious risk for refeeding syndrome, a condition where sudden nourishment triggers catastrophic shifts in electrolytes and can lead to organ dysfunction, dangerous drops in body temperature, and even death. Food itself becomes something that has to be given with extreme care. When Zelda was finally discharged from the hospital, she went home to her foster on a strict 800 kcal per day diet, split into four carefully measured meals every six hours. She also needed fluids administered under her skin every single day by her foster.

Her recovery had to be slow, and it had to be steady.

Slowly recovering

Every week, Zelda went back to the vet for checkups and bloodwork so we could confirm her anemia and dehydration were resolving. As her body allowed, we slowly increased her calories. Vaccinations had to wait. Her immune system had been too badly compromised by the starvation and the parasites to handle them safely.

And Zelda fought. She fought hard. She began gaining an average of two pounds a week. Her foster started taking her on short daily walks to help rebuild lean muscle. Her fluids were gradually reduced from every day, to every other day, to a few times a week, to once a week, until finally she didn't need them at all. Her bloodwork came back normal.

Today, Zelda is a healthy, fully vaccinated, spayed, happy, playful girl weighing 52 pounds. She is, quite simply, the dog she was always meant to be.

This is what your support makes possible. The emergency transfusion. The ICU stay. The months of weekly checkups, bloodwork, prescription food, and fluids given at home. The patient, careful work of bringing a dog back from the brink when her own body had almost given up. None of it happens without the people who stand behind GSRA.
