When we launched the Benny Memorial Medical Fundraiser, we had no idea what the next few weeks would bring. Benny's story set the tone for this campaign, a reminder that rescue is not always neat, not always in time, but always worth doing. As we close out this fundraiser on June 20th, we want to introduce you to the dog whose story may be the most powerful example yet of what your generosity makes possible.
This is Nika.
Nika came to us as an owner surrender. Her family was moving and made the decision to leave her behind. Not just Nika, but also the father of her litter and her eight newborn puppies. With shelters full and the puppies so newly born, the likelihood of survival was grim. Newborn puppies without a nursing mother do not last long, and Nika had stopped nursing.
Several rescue groups reached out to us for help. One of our board members immediately got to work, trying to find someone to bottle feed the puppies and figure out why Nika was unable to nurse. What the vet discovered was alarming. Nika appeared to have a blockage that could require intensive surgery.
It turns out her appendix was twisted.
Gone undetected even a little longer, it could have ruptured. Thankfully, we caught it just in time and, because of the donations raised through this fundraiser, were able to say yes to emergency surgery without hesitation.
Nika is now recovering. Her puppies are safe in the hands of dedicated volunteers who are bottle feeding them around the clock. When the puppies are old enough, GSRA will be welcoming four of them into our care, and a partner rescue will be taking the other four.
None of this happens without you.
As of today, our amazing community has raised $16,194 toward our $20,000 goal. We are so close. The funds raised go directly to cases exactly like Nika's, emergency surgeries, diagnostics, and the kind of care that gives dogs a second chance when the world has let them down.
