The Benny Memorial Medical Fundraiser

As we begin our Spring Medical Fundraiser, I wanted to share a story I expected to tell in a very different way, about one of our newest boys, Benny.

Benny was hit by a car and sat in a shelter for eight days without the treatment he desperately needed. When we were able to bring him into GSRA, our medical coordinator took him straight to the emergency hospital, where the team immediately started care. Benny had internal injuries, an infection, a broken femur, pneumonia and a broken hip, among other medical issues. He was in rough shape and very sick, but the veterinarians were cautiously optimistic that we could give him a real chance.

After careful evaluation, the best option for Benny’s recovery was amputation. It offered the clearest path to relief and quality of life. Benny struggled early on, high fevers, the need for oxygen, and the steep climb that comes with serious trauma. But then he began to turn a corner. He started eating again. He was able to come off oxygen. Each day our medical coordinator visited Benny and he showed so much love and gratitude. Benny was one of those "one in a million" dogs that we KNEW would be amazing. We scheduled his surgery, hopeful that this would be the point where Benny’s story became one of the recoveries that remind us why we do this. We all went to bed Wednesday night feeling hopeful and excited for Benny’s future. He had an entire team cheering him on, his assessor, transporters, intake team, board members, future foster, veterinarians and vet techs, and our medical coordinator on the ground. Benny was surrounded by love.

Tragically, on surgery day, everything changed. Benny showed lameness in his front leg, and the doctor found a bicep tear that had not been present before, even though he hadn’t been walking around. Then he spiked a very high fever and stopped eating the night before, again. We were no longer looking at a dog going from four legs to three. We were facing the possibility of four legs to two, with no clear explanation for the persistent fevers or his repeat oxygen requirement. With the guidance of the veterinary team and after a difficult discussion with our board, we made the most heartbreaking decision a rescue ever has to make: we let Benny go with dignity.

Our medical coordinator stayed with him. She held him, told him what a good boy he was, and reminded him—over and over—how loved he was.

Benny did not die alone in a shelter. He knew warmth. He knew gentle hands. He knew comfort and good pain medication. He knew love.

This, too, is rescue, but it hurts.

To say we are gutted barely scratches the surface of how deeply painful this is for all of us. This is never the outcome we want, and it never gets easier. Benny represented everything we love about German Shepherds, loyal, loving, and strong. He took a little piece of us with him and he will never be forgotten.

This year, we are dedicating our Spring Medical Fundraiser to Benny, and we are calling it The Benny Memorial Fundraiser.

GSRA takes in injured dogs, sick dogs, dogs with heartworm disease, and dogs with complex medical needs, young and old. We provide medical care, diagnostics, surgery, medication, follow-up visits, and rehabilitation. We get dogs spayed/neutered, with these costs on the rise and started on preventatives so they can heal, thrive, and move forward into the homes they deserve. None of that is possible without supporters like you. Last year we spent $72,753.62 on Veterinary and medicine costs.

Over the next few weeks we will highlight some of our current medical cases. Cases like Zelda, Chyna, Walter and Sweet William. These dogs have a variety of medical needs and would not have made it without your continued support.
